40th Anniversary of the European Customs Union is a very important event and therefore sports men and sports women employed at the Slovenian Customs took their task very seriously. On 1 July 2008 nine of them paid a visit to five border crossing. They were drawing attention of travellers to the Anniversary and they offered them postcards and printed materials with useful customs information. Passengers, enraptured with their kind attention, were pleased to get some practical information at the very border crossing.
Gruškovje border crossings
Ana Drev in Aleš Gorza, Alpine skiers, tried their new role at Gruškovje. It was a mere coincidence that their first passenger was Rasto Ažnoh, former Sports Director of the Slovenian Alpine representations. He could barely believe his eyes seeing his former protégés at the border crossing and he did not hesitate to ask them for his first holiday photo. Numerous other Slovenian passengers were also surprised when the two skiers bade them welcome.
Obrežje border crossings
»A Customs officer’s job is not as easy as it seams. A lot of concentration and patience is needed, since some passengers become extremely unkind when asked about goods in their car boot,« commented Maja Benedičič, a ski runner.
Metlika border crossings
»Thank you, I don't need these, I know everything,« was the reaction of a passenger when offered a leaflet by Petra Robnik, an Alpine skier. But most of passengers were interested in the materials offered. Petra Robnik and Rok Flander, a ski boarder, were even asked to sign the postcards.
Brnik border crossings
Vesna Fabjan and Katja Višnar, ski runners, took a strategic position to greet most Ljubljana Airport passengers whom they offered, together with a smile, postcards or leaflets.
Sečovlje border crossings
Izidor Hreščak, a sporting shooter and a former Customs officer, recalled memories of his customs career at Sečovlje. »I was tempted to ask passengers whether they had anything to declare,« he admitted.
